Direct answer: Build crews around a specific job. Pick a captain for the Captain’s Maneuver, bridge officers whose abilities support that job, and below-deck officers that add useful passive effects or needed stats.

Quick answer
- Captain’s Maneuvers activate only from the captain’s seat.
- Officer Abilities activate from bridge positions.
- Below Deck Abilities work only in below-deck slots.
- Synergy can improve a captain’s ability.
- The best crew changes with hostile farming, PvP, mining and armadas.
Captain, bridge and below deck explained
Every active ship needs at least one officer. One bridge officer becomes captain and activates a Captain’s Maneuver. Other bridge officers can activate Officer Abilities. Officers placed below deck do not provide Captain’s Maneuvers, but eligible Below Deck Abilities can improve functions such as warp range, cargo, damage or survivability.
Why the biggest number is not always best
Officer Power reflects level, tier and Command, Science and Engineering stats, but abilities do not all scale in the same way. Scopely notes that Captain’s Maneuvers are affected by synergy rather than the captain’s level or tier. Read the exact condition: an ability that triggers only against players will not help against ordinary hostiles.
Start with the activity, then choose the captain, support abilities and required stats.
A repeatable crew-building method
- Name the target: hostile, player, station, armada or mining node.
- Choose a captain whose maneuver works against that target.
- Add bridge officers that create or exploit the same condition.
- Fill below deck with relevant abilities, then meet the ship’s stat thresholds.
- Read one combat log and adjust instead of guessing from power alone.
Save separate presets when possible. A reliable hostile crew should not be rebuilt every time you return from mining.
Early crew priorities
Do not level every officer equally. Invest first in officers you use across several activities, while keeping specialist officers ready for their correct task. Official lower-Operations PvP examples include Cadet Kirk as captain with Cadet Uhura and Cadet Sulu, but current availability and your roster can differ. Treat examples as starting points and verify each ability in your game version.
Frequently asked questions
Does officer level improve every ability?
No. Scopely notes that abilities scale differently; Captain’s Maneuvers depend on synergy rather than level or tier.
Can below-deck officers use Captain’s Maneuvers?
No. Captain’s Maneuvers require the captain’s seat.
Should one crew be used everywhere?
No. Mining, hostiles, PvP and armadas reward different abilities and conditions.
Spixla verdict
Crew knowledge is one of the highest-value skills in STFC. Read conditions carefully and build for the activity; that habit saves more resources than blindly upgrading the highest-power officers.
